The film traces their beginnings during COVID to the work they continue to do today advocating, organizing, and creating lasting change in San Diego. The San Diego API Coalition continues to show up in powerful ways — from being recognized by the San Diego City Council during Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, to celebrating Lunar New Year alongside community leaders across the city and county. What stood out most was the intergenerational nature of the coalition — bringing together established leaders and youth voices, creating space for the next generation to step into leadership and shape the future. Spending time with the coalition, we gained a deeper understanding of the work happening behind the scenes and left feeling incredibly inspired by the leaders driving it forward. A Return to Home: Gagana Samoa is a 30-minute documentary that follows adults and families enrolled in a free Samoan language and performing arts program created by Dr. Grant Muāgututiʻa and the APIDA Initiative at CSU San Marcos. Through intimate interviews, classroom moments, and cultural practice, the film reveals how learning Gagana Sāmoa unlocks deeper connections- between grandparents and grandchildren, parents and children, and individuals and their own sense of self.
