This past month, we had the honor of filming with Umeke, a nonprofit in Oceanside dedicated to perpetuating Hawaiian culture and history. Our focus for the day was lei making — an art form that is so much more than stringing flowers together. It’s a practice of love, respect, and connection. Each flower, leaf, or seed carries its own meaning, and when woven together, they tell a story that’s worn, gifted, or offered with intention.
Did you know that leis aren’t only given to people? Traditionally, they were also created to honor the land, the ocean, and the gods. That deep sense of respect and gratitude was present in every moment of our filming — from the careful weaving of each lei to the conversations about what these traditions mean today.

We’re especially grateful to the Umeke staff — Tiffany, Christina, and Ilima — who welcomed us with warmth, patience, and generosity. Their kindness created such a beautiful space for us to learn and capture the essence of lei making on film.
Projects like this remind us why we do what we do: storytelling through video isn’t just about visuals, it’s about preserving traditions, celebrating community, and honoring the people who carry culture forward.
